The Art of Heart Health: Cholesterol Studies & Treatment
James D. Mickle Jr., MD, Diplomate, American Board of Clinical Lipidology
- Santa Fe’s only board-certified cholesterol specialist, and New Mexico's only "dedicated" lipidologist
- Preventing, halting, and reversing artery disease
- Avoiding heart attack and stroke
Dr. Mickle treats the patient, not the cholesterol number. Using advanced lab tests and artery ultrasound, he tailors treatment to each patient, recommending natural supplements, reasonable diet and lifestyle changes, and prescribing medications prudently when necessary.

A note on insurance: Some insurers do not
currently recognize Clinical Lipidology as a specialty, and will not reimburse for it. We encourage patients to ask their insurance providers if they will cover treatment by James D. Mickle, Jr. MD.
Here is a partial list of insurers that have covered our services: Medicare (with the exception of Medicare-Lovelace); Aetna; United Healthcare; Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The following insurers have not covered our services: Lovelace (HMO, PPO, and Medicare-Lovelace); Presbyterian HMO and PPO (Medicare-Presbyterian does cover us); some HMOs of other insurers. For patients whose insurance does not cover our services, alternate payment schedules can be arranged.
Recent plans created with the ACA (Affordable Care Act) have specific protocols for non-contracted providers such as myself. You'll need to clarify with your insurer if they approve visits with pre-certification.
Humana and Cigna coverage varies according to plans—Humana and Cigna patients should check with their insurer.
Cholesterol Studies and Treatment works with several advanced laboratories and strives to ensure that laboratory costs are covered by insurance and/or affordable to patients.
